 Lichen is not like most alga's. Its a fungus and algae working together. It can grow without soil and has a deep penetrating root system that will eventually borrow through your shingle.

Lichen does the most damage to your roof. It releases acids that breakdown the shingles granular eating its way through the shingle. Eventually causing leaks.
